Spanish Courses in Santo Domingo

The city of Santo Domingo is very much a pure Dominican city, it has retained its authenticity where other cities and towns have become more commercialised Santo Domingo has not. Visitors can still observe the locals playing a traditional game of dominoes outside on a stone table.

At the heart of the city is the Zona Colonial this is the initial settlement which was made by Colombus and also the Spanish explorers in the new world. It is a world heritage site and dates back to the 1500's, the cobblestoned street of Calle de las Damas has been given the proud title of the oldest street dating to 1502.

The street is largely pedestrianised and is an ideally suited location for historians. There is plenty to occupy them with numerous historical buildings and monuments including the Catedral de Santa Maria la Menor which is the oldest cathedral throughout the Americas. Construction was started in the year 1514 and was concluded in the year 1540.

The cathedral is lavishly decorated with both gothic and baroque designs and the treasury houses a wonderful collection of art from ancient wood carvings to furnishings and glittering jewels.
